I’ve been meaning to paint the outside of our house for a couple years now but haven’t gotten around to it (thanks, kids), but now it’s finally unavoidable. Got a quote just to see what my time would be worth, and they came back with $10grand for paint and new shutters, 13 with some additional trim work. Probably pass on that. So I’m looking at paint sprayers. I had one of those handheld Wagner’s but don’t think it’s up to the task. Looking at something like:

http://m.homedepot.com/p/Graco-X5-Airless-Paint-Sprayer-262800/100634354?keyword=graco+x5&searchtype=suggest

Anyone with any experience with this, or similar? Worth it, or should I suck it up and get brushes and rollers? Or just bite the bullet or get it professionally done?

$10,000!? To paint a house!??! You mean, they’re replacing siding, right? because otherwise that’s ridiculous....

10k doesn’t seem that bad, but then how many stories is your house?

No idea how big your house is, the prep work will be the killer, probably gotta sand and mask off a ton of area, especially with a sprayer.

I’d look into a vinyl wrap. Cheetah print or something.

You gotta figuring in scraping, cleaning up, insurance, size of the house, profit, labor.

Lots of variables, it could be reasonable.

Nope. Paint and shutters. We’ve used this company before for roof and they were cheapest then (but did great work). DC metro area expensive as hell. House is split level with brick lower part as well, so nothing crazy.

Split level, lower half brick. So one story needs to be painted, essentially.

I like this idea....

That’s my concern. Cleanup as well. Don’t know when one becomes more efficient than the other.

That does seem like a lot then. My parents paid more for that on our house, but then it’s a two story with a basement and the basement level is exposed on 2/4 sides and on one side of the house it’s like a 40 foot drop to the ground because of the way the house sits on the hill.

that sprayer wont work. your house paint will be in 5 gallon sizes or you’ll want to put you gallons into a larger bucket. you’ll suck them down soo fast you’ll hate life with that small one. http://www.homedepot.com/p/Graco-X7-Airless-Paint-Sprayer-262805/100634350 you want one for larger use like this one.

also get a pressure washer too if you dont, it will cut pre time in half..

also try not to kill your self. House painting sucks.. is siding an option??

I’ve used an older Titan model that was a lot like that unit. It worked okay, but I like the wheeled versions better. Have you considered renting one?

Isn’t this what kids are for?

Try getting some other quotes

Siding is cost prohibitive as there’s a good chance some of the original shingles are asbestos. So testing to confirm and then the hazmat disposal to remove is bonkers.

Thanks for the heads up on the sprayer, though!

I don’t have to figure anything in. I’m still chocking on the price...

Why not get a quote for having them put siding up instead. Don’t have to worry about painting siding.

I’m guessing cost will be half to third of purchase cost, so might as well buy? I’ll use it again at some point. Will check and confirm.

Kids not old enough yet, 1 and 3. We used this company in the past, liked their work and prices then. Even if someone came in at 3/4 cost, I imagine my time isn’t worth that much.

Absolutely. That’s why I’m leaning towards “no thanks, I’ll do it myself”.

Current shingles likely asbestos, the remediation will cost a fortune to have them safely removed.

Hmm you said D.C. area? How big is this house?

If it was a one-time rental, you could get away with one of those. But like itschrome mentioned, if you’re playing for keeps, you’re gonna want to invest in something more to your liking. The bigger units are worth it, IMO. The wheeled chassis alone make a huge difference.

Two story split level, brick lower half. One one section a true two stories up. May 50ft by 30ft (semi-wild speculation)

oh boy, yeah that’s no good. let that shit lay. and yeah def, that sprayer unit is the same as you posted just kitted for 5 gallon buckets vs one gallon of interior. so if you feel confident in your fabrication abilities you can probably save a hindered.

It looks like it can handle a larger tip, too, which might be helpful for the exterior paint&primer combos.

One day rental is $100, week long rental is more than purchase price. If this takes me more than two days or I use it more than once, just buy the thing.
